About Us

Founded in 2001 by a group of friends studying at Boğaziçi University, Altyazı is a cinema magazine published entirely independently, without affiliation to any publishing group, and its content reflects this commitment to independence.

Since its first monthly issue in October 2001, Altyazı Cinema Magazine has embraced an approach that prioritizes film criticism and analysis. Launched with the vision of being “a magazine that thinks about cinema,” Altyazı provides commentary-focused articles on films released in Turkey while giving visibility to fields often overlooked by mainstream media, such as short films, documentaries, and experimental cinema. By focusing exclusively on original content—strictly avoiding compilations and translated works—Altyazı aims to provide an open platform for young film critics to express their ideas, thereby fostering a vibrant cinema culture in the country.

Launched in 2001 with the support of the photography magazine Geniş Açı, the journal quickly became a platform for sharing and communication, featuring contributions from a wide range of individuals, from students to academics, and from film enthusiasts to filmmakers.

After taking a brief hiatus in 2019, Altyazı resumed publication every two months starting with its May-June 2019 issue. Beginning in May 2020, it returned to a monthly schedule, this time reaching readers in a digital format.

The magazine’s journey continues online under  Altyazı Cinema Association, which was founded in March 2019. The Altyazı Cinema Association is active not only in publishing but also in various other areas of cinema. The association has for years organized cinema seminars as an organic part of film culture. It also holds events in collaboration with festivals, film screenings, and discussions, and runs Altyazı Fasikül: Free Cinema, a platform that focuses on freedom of expression in cinema. All these activities take place under the umbrella of the association.
